In the Beginning: Home

My childhood house is going to be sold. Wait…I mean my childhood “home.” “House” sounds cold. It implies a structure—a place to eat and sleep and have shelter from the elements. A “home” is far different. It is a womb, a cocoon, a bunting of sorts. Hopefully it is the place where one experiences protection and growth, where nurturing and love can lead to everlasting, wonderful memories.

I grew up in a “home” alongside a wonderful mother and father and a much younger sister. We were bonded to one another even though I didn’t fully realize it at the time. I know now. I know because whenever one member left, a hole remained in the others.

My parents were the offspring of immigrants who had taught them great values, including a tireless work ethic. They sacrificed throughout their lives to give the best life they could to us—their daughters. We, in turn, learned this devotion well. In later years, my sister and I cared for our parents the way they had cared for us.

Devotion and hard work were not the only things learned in that home. Home was where I learned about respect and how to treat others. It was where I learned about responsibility (and boy, did I learn about that!) and about God. Never in all those years growing up did I entertain the thought that my childhood home would be sold or that my parents wouldn’t be there. But life has its plan. Parents become older. They can become ill and die. By the same token, offspring grow up and begin their own lives. So why does it hurt so much? Because home is where my story begins.
